Rochdale boss Keith Hill has spoken of his reluctance in letting on-loan shot-stopper Tommy Lee go.

League Two outfit could not have three keepers on its books

Rochdale boss Keith Hill has spoken of his reluctance in letting on-loan shot-stopper Tommy Lee go. Hill says he 'would have loved' to keep Lee at the club after the shot-stopper enjoyed an 'immense' loan-spell there from Macclesfield last season. He was filling in for the injured James Spencer and Sammy Russell but the pair are now set to be fit for the start of the 2008/09 campaign. So Hill has had to let Lee go as he could not have three goalkeepers on his books.

Very unfortunate

The Rochdale boss said: "I would have loved to have been able to sign Tommy but we already have James Spencer under contract and for me, Sammy Russell is one of the best keepers in our division. "Tommy was immense for this football club and he will get another opportunity I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever. "It is my job to safeguard the future of the football club and as I say I cannot have three goalkeepers so Tommy is very unfortunate that football can be such a ruthless game at times."
