Striker fails to secure work permit for USA move

Notts County striker Luke Rodgers is to stay at Meadow Lane after his move to MLS side New York Red Bulls collapsed because he could not obtain a work permit. The 28-year-old bid farewell to his team-mates and supporters after the recent home win over Lincoln but will now stay until the summer at least. County manager Steve Cotterill is pleased Rodgers is staying but admits he could still join the Red Bulls in the summer if granted a work permit. "I think he was embarrassed that he hadn't gone but I'm glad he's not going because he's scored important goals for us," said Cotterill. "I think they are still interested in signing him in the summer and he would obviously go with my blessing but we won't know the answer to that for another four weeks." A move to the Red Bulls would see Rodgers link up with Hans Backe, who was in charge of the Magpies for nine games earlier this season.
