Rochdale manager Keith Hill believes greed was behind Rory McArdle's decision to accept a summer move to Aberdeen.
McArdle has signed a pre-contract agreement to join the SPL side after turning down the opportunity to extend his deal at Rochdale.
The 23-year-old's decision to move to Pittodrie also means Dale will not be eligible for compensation and Hill is unhappy with how the defender's transfer has come about.
"Rory McArdle had a pre-contractual agreement with Aberdeen and I believe it's been in the offing for some time," Hill told the Manchester Evening News.
"I can't see anything other than greed in Rory going to Aberdeen. If he was 24 years old and available to go on a free, he would not be going to the SPL. He'd be going to League One or possibly a lower end Championship club.
"That's what makes a mockery of the whole situation. He's gone to Aberdeen purely as there is no financial implication or compensation involved.
"I don't have any problems with players exercising the right to talk to other clubs, but I'm very disappointed on this one. I think it's fuelled by a pocketful of green."
McArdle joined Dale in 2007 from Sheffield Wednesday after two loan spells at Spotland and he made 22 appearances for the club this season.
