Macclesfield boss Gary Simpson admits it is '50/50' whether teenage striker John Rooney will be at the club next season.
The 19-year-old's current contract with the Silkmen expires this summer and he has been offered a new deal to stay.
But several higher-placed clubs are known to be monitoring his situation and Simpson believes it will be 'fair enough' if he secures a switch.
The Silkmen boss told the Manchester Evening News: "If the lad does get a move, then that's fair enough.
"We'll get a compensation payment for him if that is the case. I really don't know if he'll stay, it's 50/50."
As regards other transfer dealings, Simpson, who returns from his summer break this weekend, admits it has been quiet.
He added: "I've had just one or two agents and players get in touch.
"But that's all, we'll obviously speak in more detail later, and I'm sure that more players, managers and agents will be getting in touch when I come back.
"At the moment it is very quiet, I was expecting my phone to be a lot busier while I'm away but I think it's the same everywhere, there's been no exceptional activity."
