Brown tracking Gulls' Howe

Phil Brown has admitted he is keen to bring Rene Howe to Southend as the Torquay man looks for a move.

The striker scored 16 times for the Gulls last season but looks set to leave Plainmoor, with Southend a possible destination. Boss Brown, who is building a team he believes will challenge for promotion, would like to bring the 26-year-old to Roots Hall. He told the Southend Echo: "Rene is a strong player with a proven record in League Two so it's only natural the club would be interested in someone like him if he's available. "It's still very early in terms of looking at who is keen to come in and who is available for what price, but Rene is certainly someone Southend are aware of and are tracking." Howe appears to have plenty of options, however, with Sheffield United, Exeter and Plymouth also rumoured to be interested.
