Fleetwood secured promotion to League One after they beat Burton 1-0 in the play-off final at Wembley on Monday and Alexander is now looking to strengthen his squad.
Alexander said: "It was a fantastic day for everyone involved with Fleetwood, it's the end result of a lot of hard labour.
"I will be trying to make tough decisions on players that are here, and were part of a successful squad, and who we need to bring in. We are going to take a few days to do that, it's important that we enjoy what we have achieved.
"We tried to make plans but we didn't know what division we would be in.
"We looked at potential players to bring in but the squad doesn't need a major overhaul, it's a squad that can make the next step. As in all seasons every manager looks to improve his team a little bit.
"We want to be successful and go up and compete, it's a level that Fleetwood have never been at before so we have to go there and learn what it is all about at higher level.
"We know it will be tough, this season was tough as well but we go there full of confidence.
Alexander spent most of his career at Preston North End and says they will be the first team he will look out for when the new season's fixtures are announced.
He said: "It's a big game for the club because they are one of our big rivals from just down the road and obviously my personal connection with the club is good. But it as about the club, supporters and players going to places like Preston.
"It will be fantastic times for us. We go to League One looking forward to it and to compete it is not just a fun season."
