Accrington Stanley's return to the Football League ended in defeat.
Accrington Stanley's return to The Football League ended in defeat as they went down 2-0 at Chester.
The performance of the day, though, belonged to Darlington as they crushed Macclesfield 4-0 at The TFM Arena with Barry Conlon bagging a hat-trick on his debut.
Some 44 years after leaving the professional ranks Accrington were looking for early success but they were denied at The Deva Stadium.
The opening goal of the game came 15 minutes in when debutant Drewe Broughton (pictured) struck for Chester.
The win was wrapped up late on when Gregg Blundell fired home from the spot.
Darlington too had debutants to thank as Gaetano Gallianza (12) and Barry Conlon (32, 41 & 75) - both summer signings - bagged all the goals for The Quakers against Macclesfield.
Peterborough could not quite match Darlington's efforts but Keith Alexander will be more than pleased with his side's efforts after defeating Bristol Rovers 4-1 at London Road.
The Posh were 3-0 up at the break thanks to Jamie Day (10), Richard Butcher (32) and Simon Yeo (35). Sammy Igoe pulled one back for Rovers just after the break but Lloyd Opara sealed the win 13 minutes from time.
Grimsby came from two goals behind to claim victory against Boston at Blundell Park.
Francis Green (16) and Julian Joachim (54) struck either side of the break, but The Mariners came back strong and secured victory with youth team graduate Peter Bore grabbing two goals (68 & 79) on his debut with Isaiah Rankin (73) also scoring on his first appearance for the club.
Ten-man Milton Keynes Dons secured an opening day 2-1 victory over Bury.
The home side were reduced in numbers when Spanish goalkeeper Adolfo Baines was sent off just before half time. Despite losing their keeper, The Dons bagged victory thanks to two goals from Izale McLeod (59 pen & 83) - whose goals sandwiched Andy Bishop's 81st minute penalty.
Hereford marked their return to the league with a 2-0 victory at Edgeley Park against Stockport. A goal in each half from Stuart Fleetwood and Tamika Mkandawire was enough for The Bulls.
Danny Wilson's reign at Hartlepool began badly as they went down to a 1-0 defeat to Swindon at Victoria Park.
Lee Peacock headed the winner after just 11 minutes, but the home side could easily have claimed something after missing two penalties through Joel Porter and Richie Humphreys.
One of the favourites for promotion Walsall began with victory at Rochdale. Martin Butler's strike after 48 minutes was the difference between the two teams at Spotland.
Shrewsbury and Mansfield shared four goals in a 2-2 stalemate at Gay Meadow.
Matt Hamshaw put The Stags ahead after 16 minutes, only for Shrewsbury to take the lead through Stuart Drummond (22) and Dave Edwards (31).
Simon Brown levelled matters on the stroke of half time and that was enough for Mansfield to claim a draw.
Lincoln were held to a 1-1 draw by Notts County at Sincil Bank. Adie Moses had put the home side ahead after just 10 minutes, but Jeff Hughes's own goal on the hour gave The Magpies a share of the spoils.
Wrexham came from behind to claim a point at Wycombe. Tommy Mooney had given Paul Lambert's side the lead after six minutes but The Dragons levelled through Mark Jones (32).
The final game of the day saw Torquay claim a 1-0 win at Barnet. The match looked to be heading for a goalless draw until the very last minute when Lee Thorpe struck for The Gulls.
