Grimsby thumped rivals Boston for six, while Walsall were grateful for a late equaliser.
Grimsby thumped Lincolnshire rivals Boston for six, while Walsall were grateful to a stoppage-time goal at home to lowly Rochdale.
The Mariners started the day second from bottom, but moved out of the relegation places in the most emphatic fashion courtesy of a 6-0 win.
Striker Peter Bore was the star of the show with a hat-trick. He claimed his side's first goal in the fourth minute and James Hunt doubled the lead just three minutes later.
Incredibly it was 4-0 by half-time as Ciaran Toner (20) struck and Bore (42) added his second.
Martin Paterson added a fifth in the 63rd minute before Bore completed his hat-trick 12 minutes from time and end a miserable day for the York Street faithful.
Scott Dann's 90th minute goal rescued a point for Walsall who seemed set to suffer a surprise home defeat to Rochdale.
The visitors took the lead in the fifth minute following an own goal from Clayton Ince.
Hartlepool moved into third place in the league with an excellent 1-0 win at second placed Swindon, with Andy Monkhouse's goal four minutes after half-time the difference between the two teams.
Milton Keynes Dons boosted their promotion bid with a 2-0 win at Bury, secured through goals from Leon Knight (32) and Keith Andrews (50)
But Lincoln's hopes took a blow with a 3-1 reverse at Notts County. Jay Smith (2) gave County the lead, while the visitors saw Jamie Forrester dismissed four minutes before half-time.
Jason Lee (46) and Lawrie Dudfield (61) made it an easy day for County, with Spencer Weir-Daley's 89th minute goal of little consolation for The Imps.
Goals from Mike Williamson (23) and Jermaine Easter (52) saw ten man Wycombe bolster their play-off bid with a 2-0 win at Wrexham for whom defeat sucked the hosts into the drop zone.
Stockport are going well following a 2-0 win at Hereford, achieved through goals from Tesfaye Bramble (33) and Anthony Elding (38).
Bottom club Torquay were denied a much-needed win by Barnet's Nicky Nicolau (89) at Plain Moor - the home side had been given the lead by Craig Taylor on the stroke of half-time.
A 90th minute winner from Stuart Campbell saw Bristol Rovers defeat Peterborough 3-2.
Rickie Lambert (14) and Richard Walker (52) put the hosts in command, before Peterborough fought back through strikes from Danny Crow (65) and Aaron McLean (74), only to be denied at the death.
Macclesfield claimed a late draw against Darlington after Alan Navarro (86) cancelled out Ricky Ravenhill's opener (34) in a 1-1 draw.
The points were also shared as Mansfield drew 1-1 with Shrewsbury - the hosts' Simon Brown (60) levelling Derek Asamoah's opener (13) after Michael Symes had seen red for the visitors.
Elsewhere, Paul Linwood's 23rd minute goal saw Chester win 1-0 at Accrington.
