Hughes eyes critical month

Hartlepool boss John Hughes believes January could be a crucial month for the club in their bid to avoid League One relegation.

Pools are without a win in 21 matches and have collected just one point from a possible 15 since Hughes took charge. Hughes may have engineered some improvements in performances but results have remained the same and the 48-year-old has he sights set on some new recruits. "I definitely think we need one or two in to give the boys a hand," he told the Northern Echo. "My first signing has to be one where the fans go, 'Oh right, is that what we're bringing to the club? That takes us in the right direction'. "The problem I have is that with the position we're in with the 65 per cent (salary capping) it will have to be ducking and diving. "The one or two that come will probably just be here to give the boys a hand. "I'd like to think that all of my major work will be done at the end of the season where I can shuffle the pack a wee bit."
