Paul Downing is hopeful of extending his Walsall deal after talks over a new contract.

The club's vice captain is out of contract at the end of the season but is keen to stay at the Banks's Stadium. Defender Downing has made 122 appearances since joining the Saddlers on a free transfer from West Brom in 2012 and confirmed there have been contract talks. "It is not something I deal with, though there have been some preliminary discussions," he told the Wolverhampton Express & Star. "I have always said I'm happy here. I'm from the area and I enjoy coming and playing for Walsall. "I'm optimistic and hopefully we can get something sorted in the near future. "This is my third season now and the number of games I have played and the way I feel the club has progressed each year has been good, as well as my performances and gaining experiences. "I am thankful to them for that and I would like to continue."
