The 24-year-old verbally accepted an offer from Alkmaar last week, but Dons manager Terry Burton moved quickly to replace Jason Euell, who he sold to Charlton on Wednesday.
Wimbledon chairman Charles Koppel and Burton thrashed out terms with Connolly on Friday afternoon and he put-pen-to-paper at Selhurst Park to complete a return to England, after four years in Holland.
However, this move has infuriated AZ who had believed that he would be turning up for training with them later this week and they have stated that legal action may follow.
"We asked Connolly to report for training and if he does not turn up then we will consider taking further steps against him," said spokesman Willem Zeijlmans.
"We have had our lawyers look at it and also the Dutch FA`s lawyers are of the opinion that we are in the right.
"It is understandable that everybody at AZ is really disappointed about this."
