The 28-year-old had attracted the interest of Premiership new boys Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion but Ainsworth seemed prepared to make a move to Deepdale outfit in June, following a loan spell with the Lancashire club last season.
However, Ainsworth instead becomes Dons manager Stuart Murdoch's first signing since he took charge at Selhurst Park and the former Port Vale man is delighted to be returning to the South London club for the new campaign.
Ainsworth told the Wimbledon official website: "I'm delighted to have resolved the situation and re-signed for Wimbledon.
"I'm looking forward to playing and being a part of the team."
Blackburn-born Ainsworth originally joined Wimbledon from The Valiants in a £2 million deal in March 1998 but injuries hampered his time at Selhurst Park and he was loaned out to The Lilywhites for three months last March.
