The 29-year-old has made just 42 appearances in five years with The Dons, since his £2 million move from Port Vale in March 1998.
Ainsworth was the subject of transfer talk earlier in the season, after a successful loan spell at Division One strugglers Walsall.
Saddlers boss Colin Lee was keen to seal a permanent move for the midfielder but Wimbledon manager Stuart Murdoch was insistent on a cash deal, which the Bescot Stadium club could not afford at the time.
He has since proven to be a key player with the South West London club but the midfielder knows there are no guarantees for next season.
"There is nothing happening at the moment with Wimbledon, but I want to put in more performances like I did against Portsmouth to turn a few heads," Ainsworth told The Evening Standard.
"I am playing for a new contract."
