The 20-year-old has put pen-to-paper on a deal that will keep him with The Dons until the end of the 2005/06 season.
Leigertwood has made an impact since breaking into manager Stuart Murdoch's first team this season, having played 27 matches for the club.
Despite being currently sidelined with an ankle injury, the defender is pleased to have signed his new deal.
"It's been a brilliant season for me. Things have gone so well with me getting a run in the first team," Leigertwood told the club's official website.
"I've been a regular in the first team after coming in and I didn't expect to play as much as I have done.
"I knew after my birthday back in November that there was a good chance I would get a new deal and I'm just glad to get it done.
"It's a relief to get a long-term contract and I can just concentrate on the football now."
Leigertwood added that the ankle ligament damage he is trying to recover from is slow going at the moment.
"I'm working with the physios and don't really want to put a date on when I'll be back but I think we're looking at a few weeks at the moment," he said.
