Dunbavin has established himself as the number one at Gay Meadow at the tender age of 21, and his form prompted the club to offer him a new, improved deal.
Shrews boss Kevin Ratcliffe appeared delighted to have secured another youngster on a long-term deal, saying: "The thing with Bavo is he's a young lad and he's come on this year.
"He wants to play at a higher level, but you may think that because he's signed a three-and-a-half-year contract here he wants to stay at this level, but you need to play and you need to get the experience.
"He'll go on and become a very good keeper, and that's one of the reasons I've signed him on the new contract."
Ratcliffe revealed that it his strategy to sign promising players on long-term deals.
"You are trying to sign your young players up," he told the club`s official website.
"Mossy (Darren Moss) signed the other week; I'm in the process of talking to Karl Murray and hopefully he will agree to something in the near future.
"If you look at it we've got most of them signed up, Luke (Rodgers), Leon's (Drysdale) got another year to run and I'm not disappointed with him, there's Josh (Walker) for next year, we haven't decided but he's looking well.
"Most of the young lads that have been signed on are maintaining the progress we had hoped they would make."
Dunbavin is hoping he will now prove Ratcliffe right in offering him a new deal.
"I'm delighted to sign the new contract, it's great get it sorted out," he said.
"It shows the gaffer has faith in me and I'd like to thank him for the opportunity.
"I just hoped I can do well and live up to the fans` expectations.
"I'd like to thank all the Town fans for their support over the last couple of years, and hopefully the lads can keep pushing for the top this year."
