The 23-year-old will train with The Dragons this week after accepting the offer of a trial from Wrexham boss Denis Smith.
Dunbavin was number one at Gay Meadow before Shrews boss Jimmy Quinn brought in fellow custodian Scott Howie from Bristol Rovers.
The former Liverpool trainee, who still has 15 months left on his contract with Shropshire non-leaguers, has been on Shrewsbury's transfer list since October and had rejected a loan move to non-league side Burscough.
"Wrexham phoned up and wanted to have a look at him, so they have taken him for a few days training," said Quinn.
"Ian knows the script, I've told him that I want to try to bring young Joe Hart through, so he's got to get himself fixed up.
"He's just gone to train there until the end of the week, so we'll see how he gets on and what develops."
