Herd set for new deal

Shrewsbury's Gary Peters has confirmed he will open contract talks with Ben Herd this week.

Shrewsbury boss Gary Peters has confirmed he will open contract talks with Ben Herd this week.

The 21-year-old defender was taken to hospital after suffering a badly bruised ankle in last week's goalless draw at Barnet.

Herd's current contract at Gay Meadow is due to expire in the summer, but Peters insists he was always intending to offer the youngster a new deal.

"When Ben was taken to hospital he was very distraught thinking that he may have broken something and he hadn't got a contract for next season yet," Peters told the club's official website.

"My first phone call that evening was to Ben to say don't worry about the result of the x-ray, we can sit and talk about a new contract next week.

"We do intend to keep Ben Herd and there has never been any other intention."
