Turner hails battling Shrews

Proud Shrewsbury boss Graham Turner saluted the efforts of his depleted side after a 2-1 victory against league leaders Southend.

Despite being reduced to 10 men inside the opening half-hour when striker Marvin Morgan was sent off, a James Collins penalty and a late header from defender Jermaine Grandison steered the Shrews to three points. And Turner reserved special praise for Grandison after the former Coventry man marked an impressive display by opening his goal account for the club. "He did well," said Turner. "He's had problems with his knee to the extent we had to put a static bike in the dressing room at half-time so he could keep it on the move and keep it warm. He had to keep cycling away. "There was a bit of pride in the performance. I thought we worked hard for it and played well at times. Even when we were down to 10 men we passed it. I was delighted with the character and delighted with the level of performance. "Down to 10 men, it actually lifted the crowd and they really got behind us in a serious way. The crowd responded, we played some good stuff and got into good positions."
