Colgan has been informed he has no future with Hibs due to the financial constraints at the club, despite having a year remaining on his contract.
The 29-year-old is eager to secure a permanent transfer away from the Scottish capital, but offers have been thin on the ground during the summer.
The former Chelsea shot-stopper is now poised for a switch back across the border with Second Division Stockport ready to secure his signature until the end of the year.
Hatters boss Carlton Palmer has been searching for a new goalkeeper and the deal would also hand Colgan the chance to put himself in the shop window.
The Republic of Ireland international has previous experience of playing on loan at that level and is prepared to accept the Edgeley Park offer.
"This is a good opportunity," said Colgan. "I need to play football to keep my international ambitions alive and Stockport have offered me that chance."
