Bristol Rovers goalkeeper Steve Phillips admits he 'can't understand' why fans throw coins at players.
During Rovers' FA Cup tie at Barrow on Saturday, Phillips was almost struck by a coin thrown from the Holker Street end.
Cumbrian police are investigating the incident and have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
Phillips insists he is happy to put up with any banter from the crowd, but feels throwing coins is 'ridiculous'.
"One or two things were being said and that doesn't bother me," Phillips told the Bristol Evening Post.
"But when someone throws a coin, you only have to turn around and it could catch you in your eye - and that's your career over.
"It's ridiculous and I can't understand why people do it."
