The former Stockport shot-stopper has played only five games for promotion-chasing Dale this season and underwent the surgeon's knife in September to cure the problem.
However, Edwards says the knee is still not right and physio Andy Thorpe admits he may need to go back into hospital.
"Since his operation Neil has trained, but he's always said it didn't feel 100% and he feels that the knee requires looking at again, and I agree," Thorpe said.
"I feel it's something in the mechanics of the knee, but we won't know until Neil has seen the surgeon this week. We had done all the re-hab work with Neil, he trains well, but knows in the back of his mind that something isn't right.
"All we can do at the club is get the player fit, unfortunately if something is mechanically wrong, then there is nothing we can do about that, he'll need further surgery."
Dale have taken Bolton keeper Steve Banks on-loan as cover for Edwards and they are looking into the prospect of extending his Spotland deal.
