Simpson has protected his virtual ever-present shot-stopper of late, but the reality of his long-running injury is beginning to set in.
Edwards played in Dale's 1-0 home defeat to Lincoln on Tuesday, but it now appears as though he will need a stint on the sidelines in order to recover.
"We've wrapped Neil up in cotton wool recently in order for him to play," said Simpson.
"He jarred his knee during the game with Lincoln on Tuesday night, and most players would have come off with the injury. But I spoke to him at half-time and he said he wasn't coming off, and if he did the only way he'd leave is via a stretcher.
"We have been putting his treatment off by the week, but the time will come when Neil will need a rest to benefit him in the long run.
"It is not fair on him to continue to ask him to play, so we'll see what we can do with him very shortly."
