The 25-year-old rejected an improved offer from The Mariners and looks set to join fellow Division Two side Notts County, should their transfer embargo be lifted when they come out of administration early next month.
Platt has been training with The Magpies this pre-season but has opted against a move to Blundell Park, leaving Groves to look elsewhere for a much-needed hit-man.
The Mariners boss is talking to an unnamed veteran striker and admitted he was desperate to add a goalscorer before the new campaign starts.
"It's just about dead now (the Platt deal). There's still no sign of him changing his decision and it's time for us to move on," Groves told the Grimsby Telegraph.
"We're getting to the stage now where we have spoken to a lot of strikers and very few of them have even got down to money.
"The proven players, the ones that fit the bill for us, have all gone. There's nothing left.
"We are having to look at younger, unproven players and one old player who could provide a short-term solution.
"We are also having to look at a season-long loan but those players, again, are often young and somewhat unproven."
