The former Cardiff City defender had a further 12 months left on his deal, but as he did not feature in manager Steve Parkin's plans it was decided he would leave early.
With Simpkins not guaranteed first-team football at Spotland, Parkin wanted to give the stopper a chance to play football elsewhere.
"Michael Simpkins didn't feature in my plans and we have come to an agreement regarding the remainder of his contract," said Parkin to the club's official website.
"It will give him the chance to seek first team football elsewhere because I couldn't promise him that here."
While one player has left Rochdale, keeper Neil Edwards is set to stay after promising contract talks with Parkin.
"I've had a good chat with Neil and it looks likely he'll sign on Tuesday," added the manager.
