The former Leeds United and Stockport County custodian revealed the difficult decision he had to make over his switch to Gigg Lane.
"I've spent the summer thinking things over, the offers from Rochdale and Bury, and it's been the worst time of my career to be honest," Edwards told Rochdale's official website.
"It has been the hardest decision I've ever had to make to leave the club, but in the end, I had to do what I felt was right for me and my family."
One player that is staying with The Dale is midfielder Scott Warner after the player penned a new one-year deal with Steve Parkin's side.
He joins Tony Gallimore in officially putting pen to paper on a 12-month deal with the League Two club.
