Notts County defender Mike Edwards is out for months after suffering an injury in a pre-season friendly.
Edwards was hurt during the club's game with St Blazey when he fell awkwardly when chasing back for the ball.
The centre-half suffered a double fracture to his right leg, and also dislocated his ankle in the incident.
He could now be sidelined until 2008, with County physio John Haselden admitting it is hard to predict a comeback date.
"It is difficult to put a timescale on when you could say Mike will be back, but I think you are talking months rather than weeks," Haselden told the club's official website.
Magpies manager Steve Thompson concedes the injury to Edwards is a major dent in his plans for the coming season.
Thompson said: "We are gutted. Eddy is such a reliable player, a great lad and I just hope and pray he is not out for ages.
"I am downbeat because he is such a big player. It will be a blow and we will have to look at it and reassess."
