The 33-year-old was knocked unconscious following a sickening clash with Derby County defender Danny Higginbotham on Saturday.
He was kept in hospital for two days, but the doctors were initially confident he had suffered no major damage.
However, a further scan has revealed he fractured his skull during the clash of heads.
Livingstone will now miss a minimum of six weeks because of the injury, and it comes as a major setback after he missed the last campaign.
Higginbotham was accused by Mariners skipper John McDermott of deliberately trying to injure Livingstone, and this latest development will not have dampened his ire.
