Following discussions with the club`s board, Smith revealed Michael Blackwood, Martyn Chalk, Robin Gibson, Craig Faulconbridge, Kevin Sharp, David Walsh, David Warren and Gareth Williams will be allowed to leave the club.
There was more positive news for Paul Barrett, Dan Bennett, Lee Jones (pictured), Andy Morrell, Wayne Phillips, Steve Roberts, Kristian Rogers, Steve Thomas and Jim Whitley, as Smith said they will all be offered extensions.
Smith appears to have thought long and hard about the decisions, and feels he could well regret letting one player go in particular.
Speaking to Wrexham`s website, he said: "This is the worst day of the year for any manager, but it's even worse for the players you have to tell won't be getting a new contract next season.
"No doubt my decisions will stimulate plenty of debate amongst supporters, but I think the one real surprise is the release of David Walsh and I fear this is one decision that will come back to haunt us. In fact for David's sake, I hope it does."
Smith added that the shuffling is not over, saying: "Because of the cash problems here, we are looking at a squad of 18 to 19 players and seven of those already have contracts for next season.
"I will also be looking to bring in new faces, so decisions had to be made."
