Accrington player-coach James Beattie is itching to get among the goals for his new club.

The ex-England, Southampton and Stoke striker teamed up with his former Blackburn team-mate and Crown Ground boss Leam Richardson at the end of last week to take on a first professional coaching role. Beattie, 34, said: "I remember playing here as a youngster with Blackburn and to be back here as a coach is great for me, it's a different angle on things. "It's a challenge for me. Primarily it's to get back playing and get some games under my belt but to also help the coaching staff here and do whatever Leam wants me to. "It's a great opportunity for me to get back playing and take the first steps on the level to coaching. I am here to help. I am sort of character who will get on with the boys and I am looking forward to it all." Beattie, released from Sheffield United in the summer, has signed until January with Stanley.
