Preston striker Karl Hawley has joined League One outfit Colchester on a month-long loan deal.
Hawley, 27, has made just five substitute appearances in the Championship for Alan Irvine's side this season and two starts in the Carling Cup.
North End defender Neal Trotman joined Colchester on a month's loan on Thursday.
Both players could make their Us debuts in this weekend's trip to Leicester.
Whilst Hawley has arrived at Colchester, they have allowed Scott Vernon to join Northampton.
The former Blackpool front man is in line to make his Cobblers debut against Stockport County on Saturday.
"I am happy to go and play some games, really. That's the top and bottom of it, because I am not playing enough here at the moment, so it can't do me or the club any harm," said Vernon.
"There are a lot of games coming up at the moment. I have turned up today and the club have got another striker in, so that has allowed the manager to let me go out on loan.
"It has been a mixed season on a personal level. I have not hit the form that I can show and I feel that I haven't played enough games. I am the type of player who needs the games to get a run going, so this move will suit me."
