Rovers manager trying to channel midfielder's ability

Doncaster Rovers manager Dean Saunders has confirmed he is trying to tie down midfielder Kyle Bennett to a new contract after taking Karl Hawley on trial. Bennett joined Rovers on a two-year deal from Bury last summer and impressed Saunders in Saturday's pre-season friendly against Bradford Park Avenue. Saunders feels Bennett has the potential to play in the Premier League and he is keen to resolve his future at the Keepmoat Stadium. "I'm trying to sort him a new contract out for him," Saunders told the club's official website. "As you can see he's got bags of ability, he's a work in progress for me. It's a challenge to keep him focused for 90 minutes and on the simple things of football. "I was saying to him, before the game, if he can get to double figures this season, forget the Championship he can bypass that and get straight to the Premier League." Former Notts County striker Hawley also featured against Bradford Park Avenue as Saunders confirmed he had spoken to another transfer target as he tries to improve his squad. Saunders added: "I've still got to get players in before we can mould the team, ideally you do that six weeks before the season starts. We have got three weeks to go but I still need four or five in before we start. "I've got irons in the fire, I met a player this morning and he will have an answer to me by Monday and we've got a couple of offers in for players which we are waiting on."
