Aberdeen have completed the signing of former Republic of Ireland defender Anthony O'Connor.

The 23-year-old joins the Scottish Premiership side from Burton Albion, who he made 24 appearances for last season as they secured promotion to the Sky Bet Championship for the first time.

O'Connor started his career with Blackburn Rovers but did not make a senior appearance for the club and had a number of spells out on loan.

He was named young player of the year in the 2013-14 season while out on loan with Torquay United and he joined Plymouth on loan the following season before signing for them on a permanent deal.

He moved on to Burton last summer, signing a two-year deal, and now takes on the challenge of a move to Scotland.

O'Connor, who can play in midfield as well, played for the Republic of Ireland at U17, U19 and U21 levels.

Boss Derek McInnes said: "I am delighted to get him. He is a player we have been aware of for a while.

"Anthony can play anywhere across the back four. He can also play as a screening midfielder and can give us a bit of presence in the middle of the park.

"We have been looking for that versatility in a signing. His versatility and ability to play in more than one position made him very attractive to us. He has a good defensive edge to his game and he has good experience for someone so young."
