Rangers have made an enquiry for Palermo's Australian midfielder Mark Bresciano, skysports.com understands.
Gers boss Walter Smith is looking to bolster his squad before the close of the transfer window and has made a new midfielder one of his top priorities.
Smith has money available to spend following the sale of Carlos Cuellar and it is believed he is interested in making a move for Bresciano.
Rangers are short of options in midfield following the injury to Barry Ferguson and Smith believes Bresciano could provide the creativity needed in the skipper's absence.
Smith has been frustrated in his attempts to sign Fulham's Steve Davis and he is now ready to switch his attentions to Bresciano.
Bresciano's future at Palermo is up in the air with the Italian club believed to be ready to sell the 28-year-old for the right price.
A number of English clubs, including Fulham, Newcastle and Blackburn are all tracking Bresciano, but Rangers are hoping to lure him to Scotland.
However, the Scottish giants could face a battle to persuade him to move to Ibrox following their elimination from Europe last week and with a host of other clubs chasing his signature.
