Rangers boss Walter Smith has praised the performances of Neil Alexander after handing him the goalkeeper's jersey at Ibrox.
Alexander has played the last three games in place of Allan McGregor and kept his first clean sheet with a stunning display in last Sunday's 3-0 win at Hibernian.
"Neil has performed well. Last season he came in at the end of the season and played in really big games and it wasn't easy for him," said Smith of the former Cardiff City and Ipswich Town shot-stopper.
"He handled it well and in the last couple of games has had a couple of good saves. We are pleased with the job he is doing."
Smith has top-class competition for the No.1 slot and admits that he may not have done McGregor any favours in rushing him back from an ankle injury.
"He was terrific for us last season. If anything, I was maybe a little unfair on him, pitching him in at the start of the season when he was just recovering from injury," the Gers boss told the Evening Times.
"Maybe at that stage, I should have given him a little bit more time and a little bit more intensive training.
"He is getting that now and maybe that will bring him back to the form he was in last season."
