Rangers ace happy to be versatile

Lee McCulloch has told Walter Smith he is prepared to play anywhere to secure a place in the Rangers side. McCulloch has been sidelined for several weeks due to injury but returned to action in the weekend win over St Mirren. The 30-year-old, who started his career as a forward and then became a midfielder, was selected at centre-back and turned in an assured display. An injury to Madjid Bougherra forced Smith to play McCulloch in defence, but the former Wigan man has filled the role in a number of reserve games recently. McCulloch is desperate to stay in the side and admits he is happy to give anything a go. He said: "I play in a number of positions - and whenever the gaffer needs me, wherever he needs me, I'll keep myself fit and hope to come in and do a job. "He asked me not so long ago if I'd ever played there, and I said no. He told me I had the attributes to play there; he tried me in a couple of reserve games, and I've ended up playing on Saturday.

Surprise

"I've played there in a couple of reserve games, and he thought I did all right. Injuries were the reason I played on Saturday. But I thought I did well, so I'll just get on with it and keep training away. "I didn't get told until before the game that I would be playing, and it came as a bit of a surprise - as it probably did to 50,000 other people. "But I thought I did well. I don't think I will be a mainstay there but I'm happy I did okay." McCulloch was happy that Rangers held on for a 2-1 victory against St Mirren after scoring both their goals inside the opening ten minutes. "They started to throw everything at us, but I thought we did well in the end," said McCulloch. "We had a few chances, and the first half was maybe up there with the best we have played. "In the second half, we let them come into it because we didn't kill them off. But it's three points at the end of the day."
