Rangers chief executive Martin Bain confesses the club will need to trim their squad in the summer, but remains diplomatic over the future of Barry Ferguson.
The SPL champions, who are preparing for Saturday's Scottish Cup final against Falkirk, have suffered in the global financial crisis and are understood to be in need of funds.
Bain acknowledges that from a financial and sporting perspective the Ibrox outfit need to trim Walter Smith's large squad, but he refuses to say whether star names will leave in the summer.
"I wouldn't say we would have to lose some of the big earners because that would only set the hares running as to who would possibly go and who wouldn't," Bain told Sky Sports News.
"We have always said - and I say we as myself and Walter - that we have carried a vast number in the squad this season.
"We do indeed need to trim the squad from a financial point of view and a sporting point of view, and we'll endeavour to do so in the summer."
Bain admitted he had "no idea" whether the clash with Falkirk would be former skipper Barry Ferguson's last game for Rangers.
With Maurice Edu and Pedro Mendes struggling with injury, Ferguson - who has been linked with West Brom - may start his first game since being hit with a two-week suspension in April following his behaviour on Scotland duty.
Bain said: "His situation is that he has a year to go on his contract. He has played a vital role in the last couple of games in winning the championship.
"As was well documented, he made a mistake he apologised for it and we'll see where the summer takes us."
Bain also refused to speculate over the future of goalkeeper Allan McGregor, who has not played since being involved in the international controversy with Ferguson.
"Walter's decision is one on a sporting perspective," added Bain when asked about the shot-stopper.
"If Walter feels that he has to pick the best team on the field, then he will pick from the squad that he has got available to him.
"If he decides to pick Allan McGregor, then that is Walter's decision."
