During the period, the champions put the misery of a 6-1 defeat in Barcelona behind them with five straight victories - and five clean sheets - to move 10 points clear at the top of the table with two games in hand.
And Lennon dedicated the award to his team for their positive reaction to the Nou Camp drubbing at the start of the month.
"The character shown by the squad following that night in Barcelona pleased me the most," said the Northern Irishman, who claimed it was more difficult for him to win these awards because of the expectancy on him, and his team.
"I felt there might be a big European hangover or that their heads would go down but the players have kicked on really well. They have great personalities, good spirit and have played really well since.
"It's probably harder for me to win this award but it's not an issue for me. It's just nice to get the recognition and given the form of the team, the goals and the clean sheets, it was bound to happen sooner or later."
Commons, the first Celtic player to pick up the award this season, has set a target of 20-plus goals after taking his tally for the campaign to 12 with another four during the month.
The former Scotland international said: "It was a good month for me with the two performances against Hearts and Motherwell the highlight. The clean sheet record speaks for itself and obviously going forward we've scored a hatful of goals.
"Coming on the back of being knocked out of the Champions League, December was a good month for us and it gave the supporters something to cheer about.
"In terms of goals, in the summer I would have been looking at double figures for the season but now I am targeting 20-plus."
