Declan McCuish entered a guilty plea at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Friday after posting "abusive and threatening comments" to former Ibrox player Sone Aluko, in February last year.
The comments, posted on social networking site Twitter and using a handle featuring Celtic's founding year of 1888, also included derogatory remarks about former Rangers striker El Hadji Diouf.
Following a number of complaints, police discovered McCuish had previously posted his home address on the site and subsequently raided his Glasgow home where they also found cannabis and class C drug phenazepam.
In court, McCuish also admitted to producing cannabis and as well as possession of phenazepam.
His lawyer, Ron McKenna, said McCuish was suffering from a breakdown at the time of the offences and had been using drugs.
McKenna added that his client had described his actions as "disgusting" and accepted full responsibility for what he had done.
After passing a total sentence of 12 months sheriff Andrew Cubie branded the posts "vile and racist," adding they had "no place in 21st Century Scotland".
