Charlie Nicholas dismisses talk of a game between Celtic and Dundee in America

Charlie Nicholas says it would be 'crazy' to play a Scottish Premiership match in North America next season.

Dundee have floated the idea of taking on champions Celtic in Boston or Philadelphia and the pair are awaiting the go-ahead from the game's governing bodies including the Scottish FA and UEFA.

The English Premier League has already toyed with the idea of playing a 'Game 39' abroad but Nicholas believes taking matches away from home soil would not be in the interests of the clubs' supporters.

"I think it is mad, I think it is crazy," he told Sky Sports News HQ.

"If you are trying to sell Scottish football, then start at home. Start thinking about the freshening up ideas we can do to be more creative about our own things.

"Aberdeen are debt free at the moment, I think Dundee United are debt free, Hearts are debt free and there's a lot of clubs who are now putting themselves on a nice financial footing.

"Why do you have to then take it away from the people who go every game to watch Dundee? The Celtic fans will follow away from home so what are you telling them? That we can take this over there because two guys that own Dundee are American?"

However, fellow Sky Sports Now guest Stuart Pearce took a different view to the former Celtic and Aberdeen striker.

"I think it works fantastically well with the American Football that has come to Wembley over the last number of years," said the former Nottingham Forest and England defender.

"It is absolutely sold out brilliantly and I would go against Charlie on this one and say I don't think it would be such a bad idea.

"If you are taking Celtic games to Boston, I'm sure they'd go crazy for it."

And Brian McIntyre, president of the New York Celtic Supporters Club, is another who believes the match would prove a huge hit with the club's fans Stateside.

"It would be unbelievable," said McIntyre, who revealed the Hoops had over 50 supporters branches in North America.

"There has been a lot of excitement over here since the news of this game came out and I think all Celtic fans across the US and Canada are hoping it comes off.

"I'm in favour of all innovative thinking and I believe this is a great idea, which brings great possibilities and opportunities for all involved."
