Kieran Tierney insists Celtic boast a chance of lifting this season's Betfred Cup and is determined to rectify past mistakes.

The 19-year-old, who made more than 30 first-team appearances in his breakthrough campaign as well as winning the Young Player of the Year award last season, twice suffered major semi-final disappointment as Celtic lost to Ross County and Rangers.

However, the Bhoys have a chance to go to the semi-final of the first domestic cup tournament of the season when they take on Alloa Athletic at Celtic Park on Wednesday, and Tierney has his sights set on achieving title glory for the first time.

"We want to win a cup," he said. "It comes quickly so if we win this we are in the semi-final stage. We just want to get out and do the job.

"There were a few lows in Europe last year and the semi-finals weren't great. But it was an experience for me because I had never played in either.

"So hopefully if we can get to the semi-final, I can use that experience. You remember the feeling when you get beat and it's horrible. I never want to feel like that again."

Celtic head into Wednesday's cup-tie in good form having beaten Motherwell 5-0 in the previous round and extended their lead at the top of the SPFL Premiership table at the weekend, despite losing a late goal to Inverness to leave the Highlands with a share of the points.

Finding the net hasn't been a problem for the Hoops, but Tierney believes they must improve defensively if they are to win the League Cup.

"We're working on it (keeping a clean sheet) on the training field and hopefully it will come together," he added. "If we score one goal, we want that to win us a game. We don't want to concede."
