Swedish striker Henrik Larsson was the architect of the victory, scoring two goals - one a penalty - and setting up another in a dominant performance by the visitors.
New Scotland captain Paul Lambert put The Bhoys in front, after receiving a ball from Lubomir Moravcik, he made a dashing run into Motherwell's penalty box where he played the ball to Larsson.
The Swede back-heeled the ball back to Lambert, who slammed it home past 'Well goalkeeper Francois Debourdeau for a 1-0 half-time lead.
Larsson made it 2-0 seven minutes after the break, when he headed home an inswinging Moravcik corner.
Three minutes after that, Motherwell's misery was further deepened when youngster Stephen Pearson was sent off for disgracefully kicking Bhoys midfielder Didier Agathe in the back of the legs.
Larsson made it 3-0 from the penalty spot, after John Hartson was taken down in the Fir Park club's box by Debourdeau.
Victory was completed when Stephen Crainey played a looping cross to an unmarked Johan Myallby in the box, who volleyed first-time past Debourdeau to make it 4-0 and allow Martin O'Neill's side to have at least one hand on the SPL championship trophy.
The Parkhead side could have the title by Wednesday, if Rangers lose to Kilmarnock.
