John Hartson (23) opened the scoring with the first of his brace, crisply finishing from a Didier Agathe cross and the Wales international toe-poked a second on 77 minutes.
Then Celtic scored three goals in the final ten minutes, with youngster Ross Wallace finding the bottom corner, defender Stanislav Varga heading the fourth and Henrik Larsson getting on the scoresheet from an acute angle after a Chris Sutton pass.
Motherwell won at Dundee to leapfrog their hosts and go fourth. Steven Craig scoring the only goal on 52 minutes, with strike partner David Clarkson supplying the assist.
Dundee United defender David McCracken scored a last-minute own goal to earn Hibernian a point in a 2-2 draw.
Scott Brown had put Hibs ahead on 15 minutes with a superb 25-yard shot, but Andy McLaren levelled 13 minutes later with a half-volley.
Then McLaren set up Barry Robson to put United ahead before McCracken headed in a Kevin Thomson free kick to ensure the points were shared.
First-half goals from Derek Lilley and Lee Makel gave Livingston a 2-0 win over Partick.
Lilley opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Burton O'Brien was fouled and Makel sealed the win from a David Fernandez cross.
