The 23-year-old has held talks with the Scottish champions over the past few weeks and the likes of Liverpool and Internazionale look to have been beaten to the punch by The Gers.
Boumsong has just six months remaining on his deal with Auxerre and he has already stated he will not be renewing his contract and is now considering offers to move on a Bosman transfer.
"After detailed discussions with the player and his representatives we are very hopeful of making a positive announcement within the next week," said Rangers' director of football business Martin Bain
"There are still some minor points to be settled but all the signs are very encouraging.
"He toured the Murray Park complex during his visit and has been very impressed by what we have to offer."
Rangers are looking at a Bosman transfer, which will see Boumsong arrive at the club in June.
Should Boumsong agree the deal, it will be a major coup for the Ibrox outfit, who will be losing the likes of Michael Mols, Ronald de Boer and Henning Berg at the end of the season.
Meanwhile, Rangers are being tipped to make January moves for Dundee's Nacho Novo and Stephen Pearson of Motherwell.
Both clubs are in administration and Rangers are reportedly ready to make offers for the pair.
Celtic are also very much interested in Pearson, who is out of contract in the summer.
Motherwell are unlikely to let him go when the transfer window opens and may well let any fee be decided by tribunal as he is under 23.
