Martin O'Neill will reward Jackie McNamara with a new two year contract.Martin O'Neill will reward Jackie McNamara with a new two-year contract after his performances over the past few seasons as stand-in captain.
In the absence of Paul Lambert, the 31-year-old has been superb for Celtic and will be recognised for ten years' service with a testimonial this summer.
O'Neill enthused about the Scottish international's role at the club, and described how he deserved all the plaudits coming his way.
"I'd like to extend Jackie's stay as I think he's been brilliant for us," the Bhoys boss told the Daily Record.
"He has taken his chance fantastically, played in a number of positions and deserves both a testimonial and anything that comes his way after that.
"Last year was fantastic for him but he'd already had the contract before that so it carried over to his testimonial.
"If you're asking me if Jackie has earned the right to longer than a year then I'd certainly think so."
The 31-year-old had been hoping for a new deal after being disappointed with just a one-year extension in the summer, and now appears to have had his wish granted.
O'Neill went on to express his delight with McNamara's evident leadership skills, and emphasised how his low-key approach had won round the squad.
"He is a different character to one or two others and he's gone about his business brilliantly.
"A quiet word to one or two people here is as good as someone who gesticulates all the time.
"In his own quiet efficient way he's got on with it and the rest of the players have a great respect for him."
