Jimmy Calderwood has rubbished reports that Kevin McNaughton is set for Celtic.Aberdeen boss Jimmy Calderwood has rubbished reports that Kevin McNaughton could be on his way to Celtic.
The player's agent claimed last week that Celtic were lining up a move for McNaughton with the player coming to the end of his contract.
Calderwood revealed Celtic boss Gordon Strachan rang up his assistant Jimmy Nicholl to put the record straight over the speculation regarding McNaughton.
"Gordon Strachan was annoyed about this report and phoned Jimmy Nicholl to set the record straight," said Calderwood.
"McNaughton is a good player but he's not for them. To say Celtic are interested is a load of rubbish.
"I don't care what is said by agents. If the agent says he's going to Celtic and Gordon tells me he's not then I know who I believe - unless this agent is running Celtic and I don't think Gordon would accept that.
"There was also talk of English Premiership clubs wanting Kevin as well but we have no knowledge of that either.
"You come to expect that sort of stuff when players are nearing the end of contracts.
"I'm always wary of dealing with agents. But the great thing is they will never get the better of me because if they get funny then it's their player who suffers.
"Nobody forces my hand. They can try all the tricks of the trade but we have been in the game too long to fall for them."
Calderwood confirmed talks with McNaughton were underway aimed at keeping McNaughton at Pittodrie.
"We started talking to Kevin a couple of months ago as I want him to stay and I believe he wants to stay too," added Calderwood.
"Negotiations will resume soon but if it's down to money there could be a problem.
"We'll do our best for him and players like Scott Severin, who is also out of contract, but there are limits because of the club's financial situation."
