Goals by Claudio Caniggia and Shota Arveladze handed Alex McLeish`s men all the points and the lead in the SPL for the first time since August 2000.
Argentinian ace Caniggia is in a rich run of form, and netted his fourth in two games to open the scoring shortly before the interval.
A fine swinging cross by Ronald de Boer was met with a powerful diving header by Caniggia to set The Gers on their way.
The second came on 78 minutes, and again came from a cross as Billy Dodds` centre found Arveladze and he rounded the keeper before slotting the ball home.
The Gers now head the table by a point, but the victory was marred by injuries to Ronald de Boer and Arthur Numan, with the two Dutch aces rated doubtful for the weekend trip to Livingston.
Dundee United moved off the bottom of the table with a 2-1 win at Aberdeen.
Darren Mackie headed the home side in front on five minutes, but the visitors showed real grit and a fine brace of goals by Steve Thompson sent Aberdeen crashing to defeat.
Hibernian were mauled 4-1 at home by Dunfermline, with the defeat sending them to the foot of the table.
This was Dunfermline`s first win at Easter Road since 1961, but they did it in some style.
First-half goals by Scott Walker, Craig Brewster and Stevie Crawford had Hibs on the ropes.
Mixu Paatelainen gave the home side hope when he reduced the arrears on 42 minutes, but Brewster`s second shortly before the hour sealed the win.
Dundee recovered from going behind to a Georgi Nemsadze own goal to see off Livingston 2-1. The home side`s goals came from Nacho Novo and Gavin Rae.
Peter Canero`s goal on 42 minutes gave Kilmarnock all the points from their home game with Partick Thistle.
