Rangers now lead Celtic by three points, but The Bhoys have a game in hand, with the Ibrox side having a marginally better goal difference.
Things started brightly for Rangers when Lee Wilkie put the Glasgow giants ahead inside the opening minute, turning the ball into his own net from close range.
Dundee responded impressively and Fabian Caballero hauled them level with a 20-yard drive.
Caballero turned the game on its head when rifling a shot into the top corner on 28 minutes.
The Gers had a chance to level the game on the stroke of half-time, but Barry Ferguson`s penalty rattled the crossbar after Wilkie had upended Michael Mols.
Alex McLeish`s side pressed forward relentlessly after the break and were handed a lifeline ten minutes from time when Wilkie committed another foul in the box.
Ferguson failed again, though, with Julian Speroni saving his spot kick.
The Gers were handed a third penalty when a Dundee defender handled in the box and Mikel Arteta took over the duties and made no mistake to snatch a point for the visitors.
