The Division One side actually won 3-2 win at McDiarmid Park and were forced to hang on after two late goals from The Pars.
Simon Donnelly (pictured) opened the scoring after nine minutes and it stayed that way until 20 minutes from the end when Darren Dods made it 2-0.
Peter MacDonald then made it 3-0 just a few minutes later and looked to have booked The Saints' passage through.
However, goals from Stevie Crawford (80) and Darren Young (83) brought the away side back into it - but it was not enough as St Johnstone booked their place in the next round.
Aberdeen made easy work of their clash with Brechin City as they sealed a 5-0 victory at Pittodrie.
The goals came from Steve Tosh (10), Scott Booth (13), Scott Muirhead (37), Paul Sheerin (40) and Leigh Hinds (85).
Rangers went one better at Ibrox as they smashed six past Forfar with German star Christian Nerlinger grabbing a hat-trick.
Nerlinger opened the scoring after 15 minutes, which was followed by a Peter Lovenkrands effort seven minutes later.
Nuno Capucho added the third, before Nerlinger (53 & 70) sealed his treble.
Egil Ostenstad completed the rout 15 minutes from time.
Hibernian secured their place in the Fourth Round with a 2-1 success over Queen of the South.
Derek Riordan grabbed a first half brace (11 & 22) and that proved enough.
Alex Burke grabbed a last minute consolation from the penalty spot - after Colin Murdock was dismissed - but Hibs were not to be denied.
