With Rangers trailing in the wake of Celtic's glory this season, the clubs are separated by 16 points, Hughes is aware that Sunday's game is the club's last chance to rescue a disappointing campaign.
Hughes has now fully recovered from a groin injury that ruled him out for two months and after an encouraging comeback performance against Hibernian last week as a substitute, the former Scotland Under-21 international could be in line for a long awaited start.
''I would love to play on Sunday and that is my aim at the moment,'' Hughes told The Daily Record.
''I came back and played as a substitute against Hibs and I'm feeling good. Hopefully, I'll have a sniff of being involved this weekend.
''It's a massive game for us. It will dictate the rest of our season so we need to get a result.
''I'm a lot fitter than I thought I would be at this stage and I can't wait to play again.''
