Hibernian taught Gretna a footballing lesson with a 6-0 win at Easter Road, while Rangers claimed a hard-fought victory at Dunfermline in the CIS Insurance Cup on Wednesday.
Hibs found themselves four goals to the good inside the first 24 minutes, with Steven Fletcher getting the ball rolling for the hosts in the 11th minute.
Scott Brown doubled the lead seven minutes later, and Rob Jones notched on 20 minutes, with Dean Shiels effectively ending the contest before the half hour mark.
Shiels added his second goal and his side's fifth in the 63rd minute, and the visitors' misery was completed by Abdessalam Benjelloun in the 72nd minute.
Paul Le Guen's Rangers made hard work of victory at East End Park, but eventually emerged victorious through an own goal from Souleymane Bamba (65) and Kris Boyd (73).
A hat-trick from Juho Makela saw Hearts through to the next round with a 4-0 demolition of Alloa Athletic.
Makela notched in the 34th minute to settle the visitors' nerves, and repeated the trick in the 46th minute to ease The Jambos' passage.
Makela completed his hat-trick in the 82nd minute, and Bruno Aguiar rounded off the scoring two minutes from time.
Richie Foran also brought his shooting boots as Motherwell ended the cup dreams of Queen's Park.
Foran scored first in the 24th minute and added a second goal two minutes after the interval, before rounding off the win with a 54th minute penalty.
